Kerala is set to transform its transportation sector with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered bus. This groundbreaking initiative results from a collaboration between a leading energy corporation and a globally recognized solar-powered airport, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

1. Showcasing Green Innovation

The prototype hydrogen-fueled bus was unveiled at a global summit on hydrogen and renewable energy in Kochi. This milestone coincides with the near-completion of Kerala’s first green hydrogen production and refueling facility, strategically located near the airport. With construction in its final stages, the facility is expected to be fully operational within two months.

2. Advancing Green Mobility

Developed in partnership with a Pune-based technology firm, the hydrogen bus will initially operate for airport connectivity and internal transit. This initiative is part of a broader vision to integrate hydrogen energy into the region’s transportation network. The ₹25 crore green hydrogen facility will supply clean fuel for the bus and other airport operations, marking a bold step toward a hydrogen-powered transport ecosystem.

3. A Model for Sustainable Infrastructure

The hydrogen production facility near the airport is a pioneering project, combining hydrogen production and refueling capabilities within an aviation hub. Aligned with India’s commitment to zero-carbon energy, this initiative contributes to global emission-reduction efforts. The airport, already renowned for its 50 MW renewable energy capacity from solar and hydroelectric sources, continues to lead in sustainability by advancing projects like synthetic aviation fuel production.

4. Aligning with National Hydrogen Goals

This initiative supports India’s nationwide hydrogen mission, which aims to promote hydrogen-based mobility solutions. As part of a broader pilot program, hydrogen-powered buses and vehicles will be tested on key routes, including Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi and Kochi-Edappally. These trials, set to commence within two years, will provide valuable insights into hydrogen transport’s potential in reducing emissions and accelerating clean energy adoption.

5. Strategic Collaborations for Green Solutions

The hydrogen bus launch results from a strategic collaboration between a mobility company, a technology firm, and the energy corporation leading the project. The 9-meter-long bus, capable of accommodating over 30 passengers, is being introduced under a three-year Proof of Concept initiative. Complemented by advanced hydrogen production and refueling facilities, this project serves as a model for future hydrogen-based transit systems.
