Amounts are computed to the paise. A depository, clearing corporation or broker may round the figure it actually collects, so the sum on your contract note can differ by a rupee. Depository, transfer and other broker charges are not included.

Rates are those in force under the Finance (No. 2) Act 2004 and the Indian Stamp Act 1899 as amended. This tool is for guidance only and is not tax advice; confirm the charge on your contract note or with your tax adviser.

Is STT charged on unlisted shares?

Not on an ordinary off-market transfer. Securities Transaction Tax reaches transactions carried out on a recognised stock exchange, so a private transfer between two demat accounts falls outside it. The one exception is a sale under an offer for sale inside an IPO, which is charged at 0.2% to the seller.

What is charged instead?

Stamp duty. A transfer of securities on a delivery basis attracts 0.015% of the consideration. On a depository transfer the duty is borne by the transferor and the depository collects it; on an exchange sale it is borne by the buyer and collected by the clearing corporation.

Are these charges the same as capital gains tax?

No. STT and stamp duty are transaction charges, paid at the moment the shares move. Capital gains tax is assessed separately on the profit when you sell, and is not part of this calculator.
